Dr. Mohamed Beltagy, member of the Executive Office of the "Freedom and Justice" party (FJP), expressed his full support and solidarity with Dr. Laila Soueif against the imprisonment of her son, the activist Alaa Abdel-Fattah, who is detained on remand pending trial in a military court, as she started a hunger strike a few days ago. Dr. Beltagy also expressed support and solidarity with all civilians imprisoned or detained in custody by the military prosecutor and military courts. Dr. Beltagy said, in a statement : "The first duty of the upcoming parliament, in sessions to be held in the first week, should be to end the state of emergency and amend the law on military courts, to stop this farce. Dr. Beltagy went on to point out the grave dangers of preventing the upcoming parliament from dealing with military laws – as demanded in Dr. Ali Selmi’s recent supra-constitutional principles document which seeks to control the drafting of the constitution to be drawn up after the election. Dr. Beltagy warned that this document and principles would certainly help the extraordinary measures and military rule to persist. Dr. Mohamed Jamal Heshmat, member of the FJP Supreme Authority, had a telephone conversation with Dr. Laila Soueif, Alaa Abdel-Fattah’s mother, declaring support for the freedom of her son, the activist Alaa Abdel-Fattah.
