National Accord Statement to the Nation
National Accord Statement to the Nation
Dr. Morsi, Egypt’s President-elect, leads a broad and diverse coalition rejecting the interim ruling Military Council’s Friday statement and its defense of the constitutional decree it issued days ago.

A group of revolutionary youth representatives and national figures met with Dr. Mohamed Morsi, Friday, to discuss the current crisis in light of steps and measures taken by the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF), such as the decision to grant low-ranking intelligence and military police officers sweeping powers to arrest and detain civilians without judicial warrant, the formation of the National Defense Council, the dissolution of the recently elected parliament, the constitutional declaration addendum that curbs the powers of the President, and the delay in announcing presidential election results, which raise serious doubts about the handover of power in Egypt in a democratic manner.

All attendees at the meeting expressed their rejection of any attempts to defraud the will of the people with regard to selecting their new President. They also rejected SCAF’s latest maneuvers, as well as the manipulation of public opinion through print and broadcast media.

The attendees agreed on the following:

First: Bolstering national accord and partnership in an all-inclusive national initiative which reflects the goals of the revolution and all sectors of Egyptian society, including women, Copts and young people.

Second: A presidential team and a national salvation government that would include representatives of all national currents, while the head of government would be an independent national figure.

Third: Creating a crisis-management team to deal with the current situation and ensure the completion of procedures for full handover of power to the new elected President and his presidential team and cabinet.

Fourth: Rejection of the so-called Supplementary Constitutional Declaration, which seeks to establish a military state, strips the presidency of all powers and grabs the legislature for SCAF, and rejection of the decision taken unilaterally by SCAF to disband the elected Parliament which represents the popular will, as well as the rejection of the decision to form the National Defense Council.

Fifth: Striving to achieve a balance in the formation of the Constituent Assembly to ensure the drafting of a constitution for all Egyptians.

Sixth: Transparency and clarity with the people in all new events in the political arena.

Attendees strongly affirmed the continuation of peaceful public pressure in all parts of the Republic so as to achieve the demands of the Egyptian revolution and the Egyptian people.

Attendees call upon all patriotic citizens from the full spectrum of Egyptian society to close ranks to protect the legitimacy of the people's choice for president and to achieve the goals of the revolution in building a civil state, a democratic constitutional modern state, based on social justice and the protection of the full freedoms and rights of citizenry in accordance with Al-Azhar Document.
